[NEWS] ]The SHS Academic Year 2019-2020 ends, but what will happen to the grades?

Last March 12, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte suspended the classes at all levels in Metro Manila for one month in line with the announcement of the community quarantine. This announcement has led the AMA Management to convert the remaining one month of classes in Virtual Class using the OEd or LMS platform. That is why the students are confused about seeing duplicates of subjects in their OEd account; one is blended and the other is virtual. To illustrate, the blended(BL) is the traditional modules and activities available since the first day of classes, while the virtual class (VC) is accessed only when their F2F teachers upload a lesson, modules, or even activities.

Despite a great platform, the Department of Education released a memorandum last March 15, 2020, about the Guidelines for the Remainder of School Year 2019-2020 in Light of COVID-19 Measures (DepEd Memorandum no. 042 s.2020), which drove the AMAES to suspend the implementation of the above local policy.

4.b In areas where classes have been suspended by the relevant national authorities . . . such as NCR . . . the 4th Quarter Examination will no longer be administered. The affected schools shall apply the grading formula in paragraph 5 hereof, for the computation of the final grades for the 4th quarter.

4.c Further academic requirements, if any, shall be done as home-based assignments.

5.a DepEd Order No. 8 s.2015 . . . shall still be the basis in computing the Fourth Quarter grade os the learners, EXCEPT THAT IT WILL BE BASED ON THE CLASS STANDING (CS) COMPOSED OF WRITTEN WORKS AND PERFORMANCE TASKS.

5.c For all core subjects in the SHS as well as Work Immersion . .. in the academic track . . . the CS grade will be transmuted using Table 2 in Enclosure No. 2 to get the Fourth Quarter Grade.

5.d For all other subjects in the Academic Track of SHS, CS totals 70% in the original formula. Upon computing the weighted score in each component, the CS grade will be transmuted using Table 3 in Enclosure No. 2 to get the Fourth Quarter Grade.

To further clarify the confusion and advance celebration of the students, Mr. Ronald Michael Quijano, the SHS Head Coordinator of AMACC Makati explains; 

". . . therefore, the written works and performance tasks we have at hand from November until the first week of March will be the basis of your grades. If you did not comply with these basic outputs, there's a high probability that you will fail, especially those who have committed unexcused and numerous absences."

"All SHS teachers will submit the grades on March 24, so if you think you have deficiencies in your subjects, now is the best time to consult your teachers."

The school administrators strongly advise the students to answer their unfinished activities in OEd from Week 1 - Week 20 to be added in the final grade.

None of us expected this school year's trajectory, and we think none of us are glad that the school year ended this way. The threat of COVID-19 has affected almost all sectors of our society and our lives, however, the health of students and employees are the concerns of the AMA Education System that are in need of proper address.
