COVID-19 versus Physical Education
AMA Makati Senior High students learning the basics of swimming - 2019 |
As part of the curriculum, the grade 12 students are about to take their swimming lessons for the fulfillment of their subject Physical Education and Health 4. For the last 2 years, they've been using the Swimming Pool in Pasay Complex to conduct such activities. However, the swimming class for grade 12 and volleyball class for grade 11 will not be pushed through due to the risk of COVID-19. The school administrators do not want to risk the health of the students in accessing such public places. Furthermore, they cannot monitor the in and outs of walk-ins in the said venue.
Last February 5, 2020, the Department of Education issued the DepEd Memo No.15 s. 2020 reminding both public and private schools regarding the risk of NCoV or COVID-19. This is also to reiterate and encourage both education sectors to conduct preventive measures to minimize the spread or risk of the virus.
The memo was lifted last February 25, 2020, however, as the month of March enters, the Department of Health (DOH) reported four (4) new confirmed cases of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to ten (10).
The DepEd Memorandum clearly states that;
"In the interest of public health, all public and private basic education schools and learning centers are duty-bound to exercise due diligence and take precautionary measures to minimize exposure to risks associated with the 2019-nCoV ARD and support government efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Private schools are highly encouraged to adopt the precautionary measures contained in this memorandum."
"Upon the advice of DOH, all national and regional activities involving learners and/or teachers requiring travel and congregation of various schools, divisions, and/or regions are suspended. The Department shall periodically evaluate the necessity of suspending such national and regional activities, and shall, every Monday and/or when the need arises, announce whether such suspension shall continue, depending on the development of the situation and upon the advice of DOH."
The Physical Education subject will push through on lessons regarding concern sports and will maximize the use of its local facilities to maximize the observation of COVID-19 preventive measures.
